Respiratory System- Structure Flashcards
1 Identify all the parts of the Respiratory System?
Nasal cavity
Mouth
Larynx
Lungs
Right bronchi
Diaphragm
Pharynx
Trachea
Left bronchi
Bronchioles
Alveoli
2 What is the role of the nasal cavity?
Breath air in and out. Hairs filter out dust
3 What is the voice box also, known as?
Larynx
4 Write 3 facts abouts the trachea?
Known as the windpipe. 12 cm long. Rigid rings of cartilage to prevent collapse.
5 What does the epiglottis do?
Small flap of cartilage, closes over the top of the trachea when you swallow food; prevents food travelling to your lungs
6 What can you find in the thoracic cavity?
Lungs
7 The trachea splits into two smaller tubes. What are they called?
Bronchi
8 Which tubes connect the bronchi and alveoli?
bronchioles
9 The alveoli are the site of?
Gaseous exchange
10 State 6 charactoristics of the alveoli?
One cell thick.
-Short diffusion pathway.
-Semi-permeable membrane.
-Good blood supply.
-Small in size, large in amount.
-Big surface area
11 What happens to the diaphram when you breathe in and out?
Inspire: Contracts and pulls flat.
Expire: Relaxes and rises into a dome shape
12 What is the role of the internal intercostal muscles and external intercostal muscles?
The internal intercostals: Lie inside the ribcage. They draw the ribs downwards and inwards
The external intercostals: Muscles lie outside the rib cage. They pull the ribs upwards and outwards
