Skeletal System Flashcards
axial skeleton
long axis of the body - includes skull, vertebral column, and rib cage
protects, supports, and carries other body parts
appendicular skeleton
upper and lower limbs and girdles attaching to axial skeleton
provides movement to the body
long bones
longer than they are wide - most large limb bones are long bones (femur, humerus, etc.)
short bones
as long as they are wide (ex. carpal and tarsal bones)
*includes sesamoid bones that form in a tendon
flat bones
thin, flattened and often a little curved (ex. sternum, scapula, ribs, and most skull bones)
irregular bones
bones that don’t fit into any other category (ex. vertebrae)
bone markings
projections that are sites of muscle and ligament attachment
tuberosity
large rounded projection, may be roughened
crest
narrow ridge of bone, usually prominent
trochanter
very large, blunt, irregularly shaped process
line
narrow ridge of bone, less prominent than a crest
tubercle
small rounded projection or process
epicondyle
raised area on or above a condyle
spine
sharp, slender, often pointed projection
process
any bone prominence
head
bony expansion carried on a narrow neck
condyle
rounded articular projection
ramus
arm-like bar of bone
fissure
narrow, slit-like opening
notch
indentation at edge of a structure
meatus
canal-like passageway
foramen
round or oval opening through a bone
fossa
shallow, basin-like depression in a bone, often serving as an articular surface
groove
furrow
sinus
cavity within a bone filled with air and lined with a mucous membrane
facet
smooth, nearly flat articular surface
How many bones are in the skull?
22 bones are in the skull (8 cranial and 14 facial)
How many bones are in the spine?
33 bones are in the spine (7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 fused pieces - sacrum, 4 fused pieces - coccyx)
How many bones are in the sternum?
3 bones are in the sternum (manubrium, body, and xiphoid process)
How many ribs are in the rib cage?
12 pairs of ribs (2 are floating)
atlas
C1 vertebra, has articular facet for odontoid process (dens)
axis
C2 vertebra, has odontoid process (dens)
true ribs
ribs 1-7, attach directly to the sternum
false ribs
ribs 8-12 (11 and 12 are floating), attach indirectly to the sternum by coastal cartilage (except for 11 and 12)
3 parts of the sternum
manubrium, body, xiphoid process
bones of the shoulder girdle
scapula, humerus, clavicle
bones of elbow and forearm
humerus, ulna, radius
carpal bones
pisiform, triquetrum, lunate, scaphoid, trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, hamate
pelvic girdle bones
sacrum, coccyx, coxal bone
3 parts of the coxal bone
ilium, ischium, and pubis
