Skeletal System Flashcards
What is the diaphysis?
Shaft of the long bone
What is the epiphysis?
Head of the long bone
What is articular cartilage?
A thin layer of Hyaline cartilage covering head of bone at synovial joint to ease the friction of movement between bones.
What is periosteum?
A sheath of fibrous connective tissue covering the entire bone except articular cartilage
What are the 6 major roles of the skeleton?
- Support 2. Protect 3. Movement 4. Electrolyte Balance 5. Acid-Base balance 6. Blood Formation
What is the skeleton system composed of?
Bones, ligaments, and cartilage
Bone is composed of what kinds of tissues?
Osseous, adipose, nervous, and fibrous connective tissues.
What are the four types of bones?
Long, short, flat, and irregular bones
Name the Flat bones in the body
Cranial, sternum, scapula, ribs, hip bones
Name the short bones in the body
Patella, Carpal bones, Tarsal bones (total 30)
Name the long bones in the body
Humerus, Radius, Ulna, Femur, Tibia, Fibula, Metacarpals, Metatarsals, Phalanges
Name the irregular bones in the body
The 3 tiny ear bones and all vertabrae
When osseous tissue is hardened by the deposition of calcium phosphate what is this process called?
Calcification or mineralization
