Integumentary System Flashcards
How many shapes can you find in epithelial cells?
3
What are all the shapes of epithelial cells?
Squamous, Cuboidal, Columnar
What are the two different layers of epithelial cells?
Simple and stratified
Where is simple squamous found?
Alveolus (Air Sacs)
What is the function of simple squamous cells?
Exchange of gases (O2 from white blood cells to red blood cells and CO2 from red blood cells to white blood cells)
How does the exchange of gases from simple squamous cells conduct?
Through passive transport
Where are simple cuboidal cells located?
Nephron (Kidneys)
What is the function of simple cuboidal cells?
Since proteins can attach to these cells, larger molecules other than gases, can be transported
How does the exchanges of larger molecules from simple cuboidal cells conduct?
Facilitated Diffusion
Where are simple Columnar cells located and what is it’s function?
Intestines / to transport larger compounds (like shit)
Where is stratified squamous located and what is it’s function?
Skin / protection from abrasion and tempertures
Where is stratified cuboidal cells located and what is it’s function?
In glands where acidophils are located and protects against chemicals and foreign bodies
Where is stratified columnar cells located and what is it’s function?
Male urethra / maximum protection from extreme acids and bases (e.g., urine (acid) semen (base)
What are the 6 traditional skin cells?
simple squamous, simple cuboidal, simple columnar, stratified squamous, stratified cuboidal, stratified columnar
What are the two non-traditional epithelia?
Transitional Epithelia and Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelia
