What does the axial skeleton consist of?
A
The skull, vertebral column, sternum and ribs.

- Long bone (humorous)

What are the functions of the vertebral column?
A
- Transmits weight of the trunk to the lower limbs
- Surrounds and protects the delicate spinal cord
- Provides and point of attachment for the ribs and muscles of the back and neck.

What is the difference between male and female skeletons?
A
Female pubic arch- greater than 90 degrees, male pubic arch less than 90 degrees
Female pelvic brim- more of an oval shape, male pelvic brim- a heart-like shape

What are the functions of the skeletal system?
A
- Protect the internal organs
- Providing support by acting as a structural framework and a point of attachment for ligaments and tendons
- Assists with body movements
- Stores and releases salts of calcium and phosphorus
- Houses red bone marrow- which produces blood cells
- Stores triglycerides in adipose cells of yellow marrow.
