Digestive System Flashcards
What are the four layers of the digestive tract, in order from the innermost layer to the outer layer?
- Mucosa
- Submucosa
- Muscularis
- Serosa
What are the functions of the mucosa layer in the digestive system?
Secrets mucus, digestive enzymes and hormones. Absorbs products of digestion. Protects against disease.
What does the connective tissue that binds mucous to muscularis in the submucosa layer contain?
Blood, lymphatic vessels to receive absorbed nutrients. Nerves to control the GI tract
What is the muscularis layer in the digestive system for?
Mixing and peristalsis of content in lumen
What is the function of serosa, aka visceral peritoneum?
It allows movement of organs inside the abdominal cavity without friction.
In what order is food passed though the digestive tract?
- Ingestion
- Motility
- Secretion
- Digestion
- Absorption
- Deification
What is peritoneum?
The largest serous membrane
Describe dentin
Dentin is the primary component of teeth, it is a calcified connective tissue that gives the tooth it’s basic shape an rigidity.
What is the purpose of saliva?
To clean the mouth. Soften, moisten and dissolve food.
What is the substance that food it converted into called, describe.
Chyme, a creamy-like paste
What is the stomach lined in and what’s is its purpose?
The stomach is lined by a thick layer of bicarbonate-rich mucus, this protects the muscle layers from the strong stomach acid and the protein-digesting enzymes.
What does the gastric juice produced by the gastric gland in the stomach contain!
. Hydrochloric acid- kills microbes in food
. Mucus- protects the stomach walls
. Gastric enzymes- begins the chemical digestion of enzymes.
