skeletal system Flashcards
structure of skeletal
long bones, short bones, flat, and irregular
bones are connected by what
joints
joints are held together by what
ligaments
long bones
are found in the arms and legs. they are longer than they are wide
long bones have two enlarged ends
called the proximal and distal ends
the shaft of a long bone is called
diaphysis
the enlarged ends of the long bone are called
epiphysis
name some long bones
humerus femur ulna radius tibia and fibula
short bones
are found in wrist and ankels
name some short bones
carpals and tarsals
flat bones
they are thin and often curved
name some flat bones
ribs, sternum , shoulder blades, and hip bones
irregular bones
they have a variety of shaps and are not symmereical
name some irregular bones
spine including the vertebrae
compact bone
is hard outer layer of bone it makes up the shaft of long bones and the flat surface of other bones
spongy bone
is a porous, lightweight bone that is found at the ends of long bones and in vertebrae
cancellous bone
is a type of spongy bone that contains many small cavities
trabecular bone
another type of spongy bone that has a honeycomb-like structure
brittle bone disease (osteogenesis imperfecta)
results from a mutation in the gene that codes for collagen, which is a protine that makes up bone tissue. this disease causes bones to be fragile and break easily
relationship with the muscular system
provides movement for the skeletal system and they must work together through communication with the nervous system
the muscle
connects to bones with tendons which are comprised of connective tissue
tendon
t for tug on muscle
ligaments
l for link linking bones
