skeletal system Flashcards
6 Main function of the skeletal system
1)Support of the body
2)protección of the soft organs
3) Movement due to the attachment of the skeletal muscle
4) fat storage
5) mineral storage
6) blood cell formation
2 principle divisions of the skeletal system
1-Axial- Skull, column, sternum, ribcage
2- appendicular- arms, legs, hand, feet
compact bone
-Homogenous
-Found in the diaphysis & under periosteum
-dense outer layer of bones
4 Classifications of the bone/ example
long- Bones are usually longer than wide (humerus and femur)
short- usually squared shape (carpals ad tarsals)
flat- flat and curved (skull and sternum)
irrregular (vertebrae and pelvis)
Spongy bone
-heterogenous
- found in the ends of long bone
osteogenic cells
unspecialized stem cells that develop in the osteoclablast
Osteocytes
Mature bone cells
Osteoblast
Bone forming cells
Osteoclast
bone destroying cells
Ossification
-process of bone healing
-occurs while a baby is in the womb
-hyaline cartilage becomes bone
-sutures dont ossify until after birth
Bone Matrix
-85% hydroxyapatite
-10% carbon carbonate
-small amounts of Na,Mg,K,F and S
-most bone tissue if extracellular matrix
