Joints/ cartilage Flashcards
Costal cartilage
Attaches the ribs to the sternum, providing strong attachment while allowing slight movement
Articular carilage
-found at the end of the bones that protect the epiphysis and allows smooth joint movement
Hyaline Cartilage
Cartilage found in the epiphyseal line that allows for growth
Intervertebral disc
Found between the vertebrae which provide protection and connectivity for the vertebrae
suture
immovable joint that has ossified, forming a rigid connection between bones
fontanel
soft spot in the skull that are the final portion of the skull to ossify
Articulation
where joints connect and are formed, they provide stability
Only bone that doesn’t articulate to any other bone
Hyoid bone
Connect bones, no movement
(skull and pelvis)
Fibrous
Sutures;
binds together and is immovable
example of sutures
skull
Gomphoses
attachment of teeth to the socket by fibrous ligaments
Syndesmosis
Fibrous joints at which 2 bones are bound by longer
3 types of fibrous joint
suture
gomphoses
syndesmosis
Bones are attached by cartilage to other bones allowing little movement
Cartilaginous
2 types of cartilaginous
1sr rib attachment to the sternum
vertebrae, intervertebral discs and pelvis.
Common and complex
frely movement
Synovial
Types of Synovial joints
1- bail and soket
2- condyloid
3- saddle joint
4- gliding joint
5-hinge joint
6- pivot joint
1- bail and soket
Allows for radial movement in almost any direction
condyloid
Oval shape, capable of movement in 2 direction
saddle joint
2 bones have concave and convex regions with the shape of 2 bones and complement each other
hinger joint-
provides extension and retraction of appendage
Gliding joint
flat bone surface and slide each other with limited movement
Pivot joint
spins around an axis and allows for rotation
