Skeletal system Flashcards
What is the function of the skeletal system
supports the body
facilitates movement (bones attach to muscle)
protects internal organs (brain, heart and lungs and spinal cord)
produces blood cells
stores and releases minerals and fat
Where is cartilage found in the body?
Tip of nose
Outer ear
Connects ribs to the sternum and the backbone (allows your lungs to expand)
Between vertebrae of the backbone
At joint of places like knee and elbow
Ossification
process where cartilage turns into bone.
Tendon
connective tissues that attach muscle to bone.
Ligament
connective tissue which connects two bones or cartilages or holds together a joint.
Hinge joint
like opening and closing a door.
Examples: bending elbow or knee, opening and closing mouth. Movement is on one direction only.
Pivot joint
example: turning head side to side as if you were signaling “no”.
Ball and socket joint:
example turning arm in a complete circle at the shoulder.
Bones are made of
calcium and phosphorous.
