skeletal system Flashcards
Tendon
a cord of strong, flexible tissue, similar to a rope. serves to move the bone or structure
ligament
fibrous connective tissue that attaches bone to bone, and usually serves to hold structures together and keep them stable.
sacrum
a shield shape bony structure that is located at the base of the lumbar vertebrae and that is connected to the pelvis
Radius
the bone on the thumb side of the human forearm also: a corresponding part of vertebrates above fishes.
Cartilage
a strong, flexible connective tissue that protects your joints and bones
Coccyx
the very bottom portion of the spine
Joint
a point where two bones make contact
Clavicle
a sigmoid-shaped long bone with a convex surface along its medial end when observed from a cephalad position. the bone that connects the breastplate (sternum) to the shoulder
Humerus
the largest bone of the upper extremity and defines the human brachium. a long bone that runs from the shoulder and scapula (shoulder blade) to the elbow.
Ulna
one of the two forearm long bones that, in conjunction with the radius, make up the antebrachium
What structures make up the axial skeleton
skull, laryngeal skeleton, vertebral column, and thoracic cage.
What structures make up the appendicular skeleton
the shoulder girdle, the upper limbs, the pelvic girdle, and the lower limbs.
identify the bones of the leg from the attachment site at the pelvis to the toes.
femur, patella, tibia, fibula, tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges.
What are the similarities and differences between the Phalanges in hand and foot?
Each finger/toe has 3 phalanges (the distal, middle, and proximal); the thumb/big toe only has 2. Foot: 7 tarsals, 5 metatarsals, 14 phalanges. Hand: 8 carpals, 5 metatarsals, 14 phalanges
