Skeletal System Flashcards
Define the skeletal system
How the body moves, grows and develops (206 bones in the body)
purpose of the axial skeleton
Contains bones that make up the central of the body - protect the organs
purpose of appendicular skeleton
Involves all bones not included in the axial skeleton - movement of the body
name the bones in AXIAL skeleton
Cranium, sternum, ribs
Name bones in the APPENDICULAR skeleton
Femur, phalanges, tibia
name the vertebrae
Cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, coccyx
What are the 6 functions of the skeleton
Shape Support Protection Movement Blood cell production Mineral storage
define the term joint
Where two bones meet
3 Joint classifications
FIXED FUSED - in-moveable joint - important for growth and development
CARTILAGINOUS - joins bones together with cartilage only - small movements - vertebrae
SYNOVIAL JOINTS - freely moveable - allow greater movement - hinge joints/balls and socket - elbow and shoulder.
HINGE JOINT
only move in 1 plane
- causes flexion and extension
- elbow and ankle
BALL AND SOCKET JOINT
allowing movements in 4 planes
- abduction and aduction
- hip and shoulder
PIVOT JOINT
move in one plane
- atlas and axis
- radio ulna joint
- neck
SADDLE JOINT
Allow movement in 3 planes
- appearance saddles put together
- base of the thumb
Candyloid joint
Allows movements in 3 planes
-the wrists
