Wear and tear disorder usually found in 80% of Americans
degenerative joint disease which wears off the articular cartilage.
Worsens with activity
TX:
-NSAIDS,
- Glucosamine/Chondroitin
(found in the cartilage)
osteoporosis
Rheumatoid Arthritis
AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE which attacks connective tissue and fuses joints
thickening of synovial membrane
worse in the morning before activity
symptoms: tendonitis, bursitis (inflammation of bursa sac)
TX: NSAIDS, glucosamine/chondroitin
Osteoporosis
Skeletal bones lose bone mass and become more porous. easily fractal
first signs can be easy fractures
- wrist, hip, spine
x3’s more common in woman
TX: can only slow down the process
- weighted exercise
- diet
-meds
Gout
Build up or uric acid in between joints
uric acid is the breakdown of molecules called purines
- most common in big-toe
TX:
- most likely to be told diet changes: [avoid purine foods]
- if brutal: surgery
- medications
Kyphosis
Hunchback:
outward curvature
Lordosis
inward curvature
Scoliosis
“S” shaped spine
- can use brace to fix
-messes up placement of organs
Rickets
Lack of Vitamin D and calcium in children
symptoms: bowlegs/pigeon breast
can cause osteomalacia: softening of bones
TX: calcium/vitamin D
Osteomalacia
Lack of vitamin D and calcium in adults.
softening of bones
Sprain
tearing of ligaments
R: rest
I: ice in intervals
C: compress with brace/cast
E: elevate for the circulation of blood [above heart level]
