Muscular DnD Flashcards
Muscle Spasm
involuntary movement of muscle due to either overuse, dehydration, or electrolyte imbalance
symtpoms: movement and pain
TX: go away of their own
Muscle Dystrophy?one type?
Weakening of the muscle associated with the loss of muscle mass
CAUSE: a group of diseases [not enough research?????]
mostly affects boys
Duchennes
Duchenne’s
GENETIC DEFECT
affects younger boys
can lead to paralysis by the age of 10 and respiratory problems
Symptoms: gradual muscle weakening, falling, difficult to move/get up
TX: treat symptoms like pain/ Therapy
NO CURE, but research is happening
Fibromyalgia
common in women after trauma, surgery, etc
Muscle pain and fatigue associated with memory loss, sleep problems, etc
tender points
TX: NO CURE TREAT SYMPS
: diet, lifestyle changes,
Strain
Muscle tearing
R.I.C.E
rest, ice, compress, elevate
brace/wrap
Hernia? Types?
Intrusion of an organ through a tear/weak point in the muscle
symptoms: lump that disappears when lying down
can be pain
INGUINAL: Intrusion in the inguinal area like the small intestine
- usually groin area
Hiatal: stomach intrudes into diaphragm or esophageal area
Treatment: surgery and meds/
Tendonitis
Inflammation of the tendons due to overuse and load
symptoms:
pain that worsens at night
Tx: Pain meds, brace/splint to prevent for usage of that tendon, R.I.C.E, NSAIDS
Tetanus
LOCKJAW
Caused when clostridium bacteria enter the body through a deep-cut
symptoms: muscle stiffness
TX: manage complications
PREVENTION: get tetanus vaccine every 10 years
Clostridium bacteria
Bacteria that causes Tetanus
Myasthenia gravis
Antibodies that restrict acetylcholine from binding to receptor muscle
muscle weakness in the eyes and while chewing/swallowing
Tx:
Immunopresent meds
thymectomy
other meds to help acetylcholine bind
may cause early death bc it weakens respiratory muscles
Acetylcholine
muscle transmitter that complicates Myasthenia Gravis
