Skeletal Anatomy Flashcards
What is the Axial Skeleton?
Skull, Spine, Ribs, Sternum
Generally, Pain originates in the Axial Skeleton,
What is the Appendicular Skeleton?
Bones of the Appendages.
Pain is felt in the Appendicular Skeleton.
Name the three kinds of joints
Synovial
Fibrous
Cartilaginous
Name the 3 synovial joints
Ball & Socket - shoulder, hip
Condyloid - knuckles in the fingers
Hinge - knee, elbow
Name the three planes of movement
- Transverse - divides superior and inferior, usually rotation or twisting
- Saggital - splits the body left and right
- Frontal - divides front and back
Anterior & Posterior
Front Body and Back Body
Medial & Lateral
Body parts that are closer to the midline and medial and parts that are farther away are lateral
Superior & Inferior
When one body part is above another it is superior
Supine and Prone
Supine, body is up
Prone, body is facing down
Dorsal & Plantar
Dorsal = top of foot
Plantar = bottom of foot
Flexion and extension
Bending a joint is Flesion (angle decreases)
Straightening a joint is extension
Dorsiflexion and Plantarflexion
Dorsiflexion = flex foot upwards, toes point up
Plantarflexion = toes point downwards
Purpose of the Skeletal System?
Protects internal organs and provides the body with structure and stability
What do Ligaments do?
Connect Bone-to-Bone within a joint
