Skeletal Flashcards
calcium salts
an element required for bone formation
red bone marrow
found in spongy bones, at ends of long bones, and center of other bones. Red bone marrow makes platelets and red blood cells (epiphysis, flat bones, sternum, cranial bones, vertebrae, pelvis)
yellow bone marrow
composed of fat, found in central cavities of long bones
weight bearing exercise
increases bone density by stimulating osteoblasts, which are cells that strengthen and build bones. Reduces risk of osteoporosis.
sinus
Cavity or hollow space- paranasal cavity in skull
Foramen
hole that allows vessel or nerve to pas through or between bones.
Foramen Magnum
Large opening in the skull’s occipital bone through which the spinal cord passes to join the brain
greater/lesser trochanter
Greater trochanter is a lateral projection near head of femur, lesser trochanter found on medial side of femur
Acromion Process
It joins the clavicles and is an important landmark for giving injection in deltoid
Osteoblasts
build bone tissue
Parietal bones (2)
form top and side of cranium
5 functions of skeletal system
sturdy framework for entire body, protects delicate structures like spinal cord and brain, levers that attach to bones to create movement, stores calcium salts that can be reabsorbed into the blood when the body needs calcium, produces blood cells
Human skeleton made of
206 bones
Fontanels
membranous area in infant skull where bone has not formed yet, “soft spot”
Diarthroses
freely moveable, synovial - shoulders, kneecaps
