Sixties Scoop Flashcards
Date for apology
January 7 2019
What it was
The 1960’s Scoop is the term used to refer to the large-scale displacement of Indigenous children from their communities and their relocation to mainly Euro-Centric households. It occurred from the early 1950s to the 1980s, with the majority of removals taking place during the 1960s. Relocations often occurred without the consent, and in some cases, the knowledge of the children’s parents or communities. The principal motive behind such an event was the government’s will to assimilate Indigenous Peoples into the westernized Canadian society. Another facet of this plan was the establishment and operation of the Residential School system. All these initiatives had the ultimate purpose of eradicating the culture and identity of the Indigenous Peoples.
Making amends
The government has set up reunification programs which allow former adoptees to attempt to locate their lost families and communities. Despite this, the negative impacts of the Sixties Scoop continue to distress survivors to this day. Following the conclusion of this period, many filed lawsuits against the federal and provincial governments. In attempts of reparation, the federal government has allocated $800 million for the reconciliation of individuals affected by the Sixties Scoop. Many believe this to be an insincere act, saying that the government believes any issue is solvable with money. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also been urged to issue a formal apology on behalf of the federal government.
