Involved abortion gambling contraceptives guns control homosexuality and drunk driving
Abortion
In 1868 abortion was considered illegal
Doctor could get life in prison and patient could get 2 years
In 1967 dr morgentaler argued for abortion
Vancouver women’s caucus orgibjzed political opposition
The law was found to violet section 7 of the charter
Amendment it was allowed after 13 weeks if it threatened health or disability
The law was changed so that abortion could be allowed by verified practitioner at hospitals that had an abortion committed
Gambling
Before there was a ban on all modern forms except for horse racing
1969 amendment allowed provincial to manage and authorize the lottery
The federal government still managed everything and even had its own lottery
It was soon negotiated and more forms were allowed
Contraceptives
Before 1969 it was illegal to possesses any form of contraceptive
Church said pill should be banned
Thought that legalization would lead to sexual scandals
They were legalized in 1969 and put under food and drug act
Legalization gave women more control against personal matters
Gun control
Bill c-150 was introduced the terms firearm restricted weapon and prohibited weapon
Restricted weapons had to be registered and use was under strict conditions
Prohibited weapons were illegal to buy and sell
Needed a certificate for each weapon
Legal age was raised to 16
Homosexuality and drunk driving
Influenced by Britain’s sexual offences act 1967
Trudeau claimed that no business of adults do in the bedroom
1967 banned laws against homosexuality
Divorce
No divorce courts only can if private bill passed had to prove that souse was cheating
1968 divorce act allowed divorced
