Situation Ethics Strengths And Weaknesses Flashcards

1
Q

Name a strength and weakness regarding situation ethics? That is NOT either of William Barclays ideas

A

STRENGTH-
The theory responds to the needs of the time, Christians are able to live by love and acceptance rather than letter of law. For example, some Christians defend the rights of homosexuals to enjoy Christian fellowship or even be ordained because they are guided by something other than law.

HOWEVER

Edwin Williams argued that……. “Love is to ambiguous for solving moral decisions” it doesn’t tell us what we really ought to do, just to do what we think is right.

Q

Name a strength and weakness of situation ethics that’s NOT concerned with response to time or easy theory to apply?

A

STRENGTH-
John Robinson said that it was “ the only ethics for a man come of age” referring to the responsibility it gave the individual in deciding the morality of their actions.

HOWEVER

William Barclays says “ if all men were saints, then S E would be perfect ethics but Man has not yet come of age. Man, therefore still needs the crutch or law.”

Q

Name one strength and weakness of situation ethics? That is no concerned with either William Barclays coming of age nor SE being a response to the needs of the time?

A

STRENGTH-
It is a less rigid and easy way to moral decision making, it allows for a sense of lee way for the most challenging moral dilemmas.

HOWEVER

William Barclays says it over estimates the amount of free will and lack of law. The theory holds an unrealistic view about our degree of freedom, the law has many vital roles. It clarifies for all what a reasonable life is; it defines crime and protects society we would be ill advised to get rid of it.
