The site of a settlement is the spot where it is built (e.g. At a spring for a water supply)
Define the location of a settlement
The location of a settlement describes where it is in relation to its surroundings, such as other settlements or rivers.
Explain the choice of site of original settlers.
Original settlers needed food, water and shelter, so they selected a site near a stream for drinking water, near fertile land suitable for growing crops and near forests with supplies of timber for building shelter and for firewood to create fires in order to keep warm.
Define a defensive site.
A site easily defendable from attack from other settlements, such as on a hilltop or surrounded by a river meander.
Define a wet point site.
A wet point site has a water supply as its most important factor.
Define a bridging point.
A bridging point is a site where a river could be crossed most easily, and one which often became successful as a market town, as it often became where tracks and roads converged.
