Population Growth, Change And Structure Flashcards
Define birth rate.
Birth rate is the number of live births per 1000 people per year in an area.
Define death rate.
Death rate is the number of deaths per 1000 people per year in an area.
What is the natural increase?
The amount the population increases by each year, i.e. The difference between the birth rate and the death rate.
How do you work out the natural increase?
To work out the natural increase you subtract the death rate from the birth rate.
(Natural Increase = Birth Rate - Death Rate)
How do you work out the growth rate?
You work out the growth rate by dividing the natural increase by 10. Growth rate is a percentage.
How would we write the natural increase if we worked it out to be 10?
10 per 1000. (= 1% growth rate)
If the death rate is more than the birth rate, instead of natural increase it is known as…
… natural decrease.
Natural increase occurs when …
the birth rate is greater than the death rate.
