Birmingham grew near a crossing point of the River Rea (where the river could be crossed easily). This increased accessibility.

- The city was once part of the ancient forest of Arden which was used for building materials and fuel
- It was also located near Hamstead which had coal fuels –> causing more growth during industrial revolution.
