Site Inventory - Biological Attributes Flashcards
Ecological Communities
is an aggregation of interacting species living together in the same place.
Habitat Fragmentation
Human Activities (agriculture, forestry and urban development) have dramatically impacted altered structure and ecological function.
Predation
is a biological interaction where one organism, the predator, kills and eats another organism, its prey.
Grazing
is eating small amounts of food throughout the day or when animals eat grass in a pasture.
Wetlands classified as:
- areas with hydrophytes and hydric soils (marshes, swamps, bogs)
- areas without soils but with hydrophytes (aquatic beds and seaweed covered rocky shores)
- areas without soil and without hydrophytes (gravel beaches and tidal flats) that are periodically flooded.
The Federal Fish and Wildlife Service’s wetland classification scheme has 5 general classes/subclasses:
- Marine
- Estuarine
- Riverine
- Lacustrine
- Palustrine
Marine
Open ocean and coastline
Estuarine
Tidal waters of coastal rivers and embayment’s, salty tidal marshes, mangrove swamps, tidal flats
Riverine
Rivers and Streams
Lacustrine
Lakes, reservoirs and large ponds
Palustrine
Marshes, wet meadows, fens, playas, potholes, pocosins, bogs, swamps, and small shallow ponds
A large majority of wetlands in the USA are ________ system, and most of the remaining are ________ system.
Palustrine and Estuarine
Ephemeral Wetlands
are those in which soil are saturated for a relatively brief period each year or, in more arid landscapes, even less frequently.
Trees classified as:
- asset’s that can yield multiple ecological, economic and social benefits
- Provide Shade
- Reduce heating and cooling costs of buildings
- Increase the value of real estate as much as 15%
4 Factors to consider in evaluating the economic value of trees:
- Tree Size
- Tree Species
- Tree Condition
- Tree Location
