Sirs Mini Test - Wave Definitions Flashcards
Define a transverse wave
A type of wave in which the particles oscillate at right angles to the direction the wave travels
Give me an example of a transverse wave
UNACCEPTTABBBBBLEEEEEEE CONDITIOOOOON
JK - eg. Electromagnetic waves, water and s-waves
Define a longitudinal wave
A type of wave in which the particles oscillate parallel to the wave direction,
OI OI give me an example of a longitudinal wave
Eg. Sound waves, seismic p waves
Define wavelength
It’s the distance between 2 matching points on neighbouring waves, measured in metres
Eg peak to peak or trough to trough
Define the amplitude
The amplitude or any wave is the max displacement a Point on the wave moves from the centre of the oscillation, (/rest position) in metres
Larger amplitude, greater the energy of the wave
Define the period of a wave
Time period, T is the time taken for a point on a wave to move through one complete oscillation in seconds
Define the frequency
Frequency, f of any wave is the number of oscillations per second measured in hertz, Hz
Frequency = 1/ T
