single subject experimental designs Flashcards
research designs that use the results from a single participant or subject
single subject design
why is data displayed in graphs for single case studys
you can’t use statistical tests of significance
what is a phase in single subject case designs
a series of observations under the same conditions
i.e. no treatment is one phase, and then adding treatment starts a different phase
- note that no treatment = baseline phase
whats the difference between a consistent level and a consistent trend
consistent level is when the data points cluster horizontally, consistent trend is when they cluster in a sloping line
what are the three methods to deal with unstable data
- waiting
- averaging a set of two or more observations
- looking for patterns within the inconsistency
a phase must consist of how many observations at minimum in order to establish a pattern
three at minimum, but 5 or 6 to see a CLEAR pattern
what is another term for the ABAB research design
reversal design
what is the goal of the reversal design
to ensure that the treatment actually causes the change in behaviour
how does a multiple baseline treatment work
two baseline phases at start. treatment brought in for one, while the other remains with baseline. later on the second group begins the treatment phase
basically, one of them gets it delayed compared to the other
