What is the definition of Single Line Working?
When one line of a double line is blocked, single line working by Pilotman allows trains to travel over the other line in either direction.
SLW Wrong Direction:
What should you make sure of before entering the Single Line?
1) The Pilotman is correctly identified (WOR “Pilotman” armband)
2) Clearly understand all instructions
3) Be given a SLW Ticket
3) Have the Pilotmans authority to enter the single line

SLW Wrong Direction:
When do you not require the SLW ticket?
1) Assisting a failed train
2) Evacuating passengers from a failed train
3) Removing a portion of a divided train
4) Removing a train which proceeded without authority
SLW Wrong Direction:
Where will you stop once you are on the Single Line?
What will you be stopped by?
At the end of the single line, before being crossed over.
You can be stopped by a:
Hand signaller, main aspect, or PLS
SLW Right Direction:
During SLW, what speed can you travel at on a Right-direction movement?
Line speed
Unless you are the first train through, at caution
SLW Right Direction:
During SLW, when will you need to drive at a reduced speed on a Right-direction movement?
When you’re the first train over the line
SLW Wrong Direction:
During SLW, how will your train movement be controlled in the wrong direction?
By hand signallers, except where it is possible for PLS to be worked.
SLW Wrong Direction:
When will a hand signaller not be provided?
A hand signaller will not be provided if there is a main aspect signal to return you to the proper line at the end of the single line.

Why MIGHT the Pilotman instruct you to stop before being crossed over?
Where will the Pilotman stop you?
If there is no main aspect signal or hand signaller to stop you.
Opposite to the signal on the blocked line which is protecting the crossover
First train over the single line (with Pilotman):
Why will the pilotman instruct you to stop at times?
1) To tell anyone working on or near the line that SLW has begun
2) Tell any crossing keeper about the SLW arrangements
3) Check points are set correctly
First train over the single line (without Pilotman):
What must you do if you are the first train over the SLW and there is no Pilotman with you?
1) Stop and tell anyone on or near the line that SLW has begun and on which line
2) 15mph over points
Disposing of the ticket (with Pilotman):
What are your actions when reaching the end of the SLW?
1) Write CANCEL on the ticket
2) Give it back to the Pilotman
Disposing of the ticket (without Pilotman):
What are your actions when reaching the end of the SLW?
1) Write CANCEL on the ticket
2) Hand in the ticket at end of duty
