When do you NOT need to provide assistance protection?
If permissive working is in operation.
What is the standard arrangement for laying assistance protection?
3 detonators, 20 metres apart, 300 metres from your failed train, in the direction where the assisting train will come.
If you arrive at a stop signal before the assistance protection distance, what are your actions?
If it is less than 300 metres, and the signaller can confirm that this stop signal is protecting your train, you lay the protection at the stop signal.
What must you do If you are carrying out assistance protection and the signaller tells you that the assisting train will be coming from the opposite direction?
1) Pick up any detonators you have put down.
2) Lay assistance protection in the other direction.
The assisting train is approaching, do you stand in front of the detonators or behind them?
You stand with your back towards the dets
You are laying assistance protection for a failed train, when do you also lay “emergency protection” after it?
What else must you do/remember?
1) When you are unable to contact the signaller
2) During Temporary Block Working and ESW
You must remember to lay assistance protection, before continuing the emergency protection protocol.
In which three cases can you move away from the assistance protection detonators?
1) If you need to contact the signaller (continue as far as necessary)
2) You have placed assistance protection in the tunnel (go to the far end and wait there)
3) You need to lay emergency protection
As the assistance train approaches, what must you display?
A hand danger signal.
- red flag
- red light
- both arms raised, etc
Driver of the assisting train:
What is the speed limit of approaching the failed train?
Proceed at caution.
Driver of the assisting train:
You must only enter a tunnel if?
1) You have picked up the driver of the failed train
2) You know that the driver of the failed train is not in the tunnel and that the tunnel is clear.
Driver of the assisting train:
If you have not already picked up the driver of the failed train, or the driver is not waiting at the assistance protecting point, you must?
1) Stop and do not move
2) Wait for the driver of the failed train to arrive
What must you tell the assistance driver when he picks you up?
The exact location of the train
Fault on the train
Type of coupler
Who’s responsibility is it to couple up the train?
The assisting driver.
Driver of the assisting train:
When the failed train is being assisted, if you are assisting at the rear of the failed train, you must?
1) Temporarily isolate TPWS
2) Reinstate TPWS when the movement is finished
