What is single line working?
It allows trains to travel over another line in either direction.
When is single line working used?
when a double line becomes blocked.
How will the driver identify that single line working is in operation?
The presence of a pilot man or communication from the signaller.
When will you be stopped?
Prior to the single line working area where you will be given instructions on how to proceed.
How do you identify the pilot man?
The pilot man will be wearing an orange arm band on their left arm.
What must you check (regarding the pilot man) before entering a single line?
You can identify pilot man
Clearly understand all instructions
Be given authority
What form must the pilot man issue you (single line working)?
RT3193
You won’t need the RT3193 ticket if your train is to enter the single line to:
Work to and from a point of obstruction
Enter a one-train working line
How many sides are there to the RT3193 form and how many sides do you complete?
There are two sides.
You complete the side that refers to your direction of travel.

At what speed must you go over points (if told to pass at danger)?
No more than 50mph ( 80km)
What is the purpose of the pilot man instructing you to reduce your speed?
To notify people on or near the line that single line working is in operation.
What type of signals are wrong direction movements controlled by?
Hand signals
When would hand signals not be in use (wrong direction moves)?
Where it is possible for shunting or position lights to be worked.
When will a hand signaller not be provided on the single working line?
When there is a main aspect signal available.
