Undermined Dutch in Asia. Treaty angered the Dutch who demanded British withdrawl. Britain gave up Bencoolen and Sumatra to Dutch to keep Singapore

In the first year it traded 400,000 Spanish dollars and increased by 2,700% to 11m by the treaty in 1824
No taxes to dock so FT drew merchants- created merchant houses with own docks- 80 by 1846, bankers and aution houses
