Simplifying Expressions Flashcards
What are the Two Properties of Multiplication?
The two properties of multiplication are the Commutative Property and the Associative Property.
What is the Commutative Property?
With the Commutative Property, you can add numbers in any order and multiply numbers in any order. ab = ba.
What is the Associative Property?
With the Associative Property, when you are only adding or multiplying, you can group any of the numbers together. (ab)c = a(bc).
What is the Distributive Property?
a(b + c) = a(b) + a(c).
What are Terms?
The terms of an expression are the parts that are added together.
What are Like terms?
Like terms are terms that contain the same variables raised to the same powers.
What is the Order Of Operations?
Parentheses -> Exponents -> Multiplication/Division -> Addition/Subtraction.
What can the Associative Property not do?
The Associative Property cannot be extended to addition and subtraction in all cases. For example, (3x+10x)-6 does not equal 3x+(10x-6).
