Simple Molecules Flashcards
How do non-metals combine together?
Covalent bonds
Why do covalent bonds work?
By sharing electrons, each atom involved has a full outer shell.
How are covalent bonds strong?
They are strong because there is a strong electrostatic attraction between the positive nuclei of the atoms and the negative electrons in each shared pair.
Describe the forces of attraction between the atoms of a molecule of a simple molecular substance
They are held together by very strong covalent bonds
Describe the forces of attraction between molecules of simple molecular substances.
They are very weak with weak intermolecular forces
Why are the melting and boiling points of simple molecular compounds so low?
Because of the weak intermolecular forces meaning the molecules are easily separated from one another.
At room temperature, what states are simple molecular substances at?
Gases or liquids
Do simple molecular substances conduct electricity? Explain.
They do not because there are no free electrons or ions.
