Filtration And Crystallisation Flashcards
How does a solution form?
When one substance dissolves in another.
What is a solute?
The substance that dissolves in a solvent to make a solution.
What is the solvent?
The substance that a solute dissolves in to make a solution.
What happens when a substance dissolves?
Its particles separate and become completely mixed with the particles of the solvent.
How is a substance soluble?
If a substance is able to dissolve in a particular solvent.
How is a substance insoluble?
If a substance cannot dissolve in a particular solvent.
What does filtration do?
Filtration separates an insoluble substance in the solid state from substances in the liquid state.
Why dies filtration work?
Because filter paper has microscopic holes which allows the liquid through but not the insoluble substance.
What is labelled as the residue in filtration?
The substance left in the filter paper
What is labelled as the filtrate in filtration?
The liquid which has managed to pass through the filter paper and get collected.
What happens when you heat a solution?
The solvent evaporates leaving the solute behind.
When does a solution become saturated?
When no more solute can be dissolved at that temperature.
