Simple Mechines-chapter 1 Flashcards
Advantages of a lever
Reduce force needed to carry out a task
Disadvantages of a lever
Must move a greater distance than the load does
Inclined plane advantages
Inclined plane makes it easier to move a box up to our desk
Inclined plane disadvantages
You have to exert the force over a larger distance
Wedge advantages
The wedge increases the force applied on an object
Wedge disadvantages
Can only be used in one direction
Screw advantages
Increase the force used
Screw disadvantages
Most screw will movevery slowly
Pulley advantages
Pulleys help you lift larger loads than you can on your own
Pulleys disadvantages
Exert force a longer distance
Wheel and axle advantages
You can go fader like on a bike
wheel and axle disadvantages
The drawer back is you have to fire a greater distance wheel to apply force
Simples we use today
Mill wheels nutcrackers and plows a lot more
Lever
A lever is a rigid bar or plank that can rotate around a fixed point called a fulcrum or pivot levers are needed to carry out a task such as pulling a nail, opening a bottle, hitting a baseball and using scissors
Different kinds of levers
1. Fist class lever has the fulcrum between the load when he point where the effort is exerted Ex. Pliers and claw hammer
2. Second class lever has the load between the effort and fulcrum Ex.nut cracker and wheelbarrow
3.third class lever has the effort between the load and the fulcrum Ex. Human arm and tongs
