Simple Machines Flashcards
Ability to move an object using less force
Mechanical Advantage
In order to use less force you must apply the force over a longer distance
Distance Principle
Ramp
Inclined Plane
Two inclined planes placed bottom to bottom
Wedge
Screw with a flat tip
Bolt
Inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder or cone
Screw
Distance between the threads of a screw or a bolt
Pitch
A solid bar that rotates around a fixed point
Lever
Weight that is moved by the lever
Resistance
The solid bar of a lever
Effort Arm
Force applied to move the resistance
Effort
Point around which the effort arm rotate
Fulcrum
Law of moments
The farther the effort is from the fulcrum compared to the distance the resistance is from the fulcrum, the less effort that is required to move the resistance.
Fulcrum is between the resistance and the effort
First-class Lever
Resistance is between the fulcrum and the effort
Second-class Lever
