Simple List of drugs for Diarrhea/Constipation Flashcards
Cisapride
5HT4 agonist and weak 5H3 antagonist (prokinetic)
Macrolide (erythromycin)
activate motillin receptors
Metaclopramide
D2 antagonist and inhibits the D2 inhibition of ACh contraction. Crosses BBB so also antiemetic
Domperidone
D2 antagonist that inhibits the D2 inhibition of ACh contraction. doesn’t cross BBB
Diphenoxylate
Opiate with some euphoric side effects
Loperamide
Opiate with no CNS effects
Cholestyramine
Bile acid binding resin
Colestipol
Bile acid binding resin
Kaolin
Absorbant
Pectin
Absorbant (undigestible sugar notice the name is like amylopectin)
Bismuth subsalicylate
Salicylate inhibits PG and Cl secretion in INTESTINE (note bismuth basically does opposite in stomach)
Octreotide
Somatostatin analogue
Docusate
Stool softener: mix with aqueous and fatty substance to make softer stool
Mineral oil:
stool softener and lubricates feces so less water absorption
Dietary Fiber, Methylcellulose, Psyllium
Bulk laxatives
Anthraquinone Derivatives
Contact Cathartic. Uknown mechanism but more peristalsis in colon (includes senna)
Bisacodyl
Contact Cathartic that is prodrug with 6 hour latency and peristalsis in colon. Not used often b/c cardiac toxicity
Castor oil
EXTREMELY POTENT contact cathartic and works in small intestinee and large intestinee after it is hydrolyzed in intestine to ricnoleic acide
Lactulose
Osmotic cathartic: nonabsorbed sugar broken by bacteria and makes farting
Magnesium Hydroxide
Osmotic cathartic. Can be hyper magnesium in body if renal insufficiency and dEATH
Sodium Phopshate
Osmotic cathartic
Polythelen Glycol
DUH osmotic cathartic
Lubiprostone
Increase Chloride Channel secretion: Cathartic. FETAL LOSS
Alvimopan
Opioid receptor antagonist used in postop ileus
