simple distillation Flashcards
1
Q
what can distillation be used for?
A
to separate a liquid from a solid if we want to KEEP the liquid
2
Q
name everything needed to carry out a simple distillation experiment.
A
thermometer mixture in a flask liquid + dissolved solid condenser glass tube
3
Q
what is the glass tube surrounded by?
why?
A
the condenser with 2 holes for cooling water to go in and out continuously to cool down the liquid
4
Q
describe fully how to separate a liquid from a solid using simple distillation
A
- the solution is heated (by a bunsen burner e.g)
- when the liquid is heated, it starts to evaporate, turning into a vapour
- this vapour rises up the glass tube
- the thermometer shows us that the temperature is rising(but we usually just boil the liquid in simple distillation)
- the vapour now passes into the condenser
- the condenser is kept cold with continuous running water
- this turns the vapour into liquid that passes into the beaker
- we are left with crystals of our solid in the flask
- and our liquid in the beaker
5
Q
simple distillation can be used to produce for drinking water from sea water, but we choose not to. why?
A
a great deal of energy is required to produce drinking water from sea water through simple distillation
