Simple Diffusion Flashcards
1
Q
characteristics
A
- movement down concentration gradient
- no energy require / passive transport
- no assistance required (no transmembrane protein)
2
Q
examples
A
oxygen, CO2, water , ethanol
3
Q
osmosis
A
simple diffusion of water: net movement of water molecules from a region of high water potential (dilute solution) to a region of lower water potential (concentration solution) through a partially permeable membrane
4
Q
osmosis of animal cell
A
- in a solution with a lower water potential than the cell, water will leave the cell and will shrink (hypertonic)
- in a solution with a higher water potential than the cell, the cell will intake water until its membrane stretches too much and bursts (hypotonic)
- for no net movement of water, cell needs to be in an isotonic solution
5
Q
hypotonic solution
A
high concentration of water molecules and low concentration of salt/sugar
6
Q
hypertonic solution
A
low concentration of water molecules and high concentration of salt/sugar
7
Q
isotonic solution
A
same concentration of water molecules and salt/sugar
8
Q
Plant cell state in osmosis
A
- hypertonic: plasmolysed
- hypotonic: turgid
- isotonic: flaccid
