Q

osmosis

A

simple diffusion of water: net movement of water molecules from a region of high water potential (dilute solution) to a region of lower water potential (concentration solution) through a partially permeable membrane

Q

osmosis of animal cell

A
  • in a solution with a lower water potential than the cell, water will leave the cell and will shrink (hypertonic)
  • in a solution with a higher water potential than the cell, the cell will intake water until its membrane stretches too much and bursts (hypotonic)
  • for no net movement of water, cell needs to be in an isotonic solution
