Simple Covalent substances Flashcards
What are the 2 types of covalent substances?
Simple covalent (simple molecular)
Giant covalent (macromolecular)
Explain the melting point of simple covalent
Atoms held together by strong covalent bonds
Not broken when melted/boiled
Molecules held together by weak intermolecular forces
Relatively weak forces & require little energy to break
Low melting & boiling points
Explain the solubility of simple covalent
Non-polar substances cannot interact with water molecules
Tend to be insoluble in water
Explain the conductivity of simple covalent
Have no mobile charge carriers = do not conduct electricity
Why are liquids and gases as molecules not described as simple covalent lattices whereas solids are?
Liquids and gases - are not held in a regular arrangement
Solids - held in a regular arrangement
