Similar Figures SUmmative Flashcards
What are Similar Figures?
Figures with the same shape but a different Size (Dilation)
What is a similar triangle?
Triangles whose angles are congruent and whose sides are proportion
If triangles are proportionate, then both of their ratios or fractions will _______ and be _______.
simplify, equal
What does scale factor mean?
The ratio of the length of the sides of two similar figures . (Dilation is the inverse of the scale factor)
If you know the ________, then all sides of the triangle have to simplify to that ratio.
Scale factor (ex. ratio of 3:4 is equal to 3/4 dilation)
What is the Angle-Angle Similarity? (AA~)
If two angles of one triangle are congruent to the two angles of another triangle, then the triangles are similar
What is the Side-Angle Side Similarity? (SAS~)
If two sides of one triangle are in proportion to two sides of another and the the included angles are congruent then the triangles are similar.
What is the Side-Side-Side Similarity? (SSS~)
If all 3 pairs of corresponding sides of two triangles are proportionate, then the triangles are similar: (Do this by setting all three proportions equal dividing each fraction; Ex: 5/7.5=6/9=7/10 )
What is the Geometric Mean?
The geometric mean between two positive numbers a and b is the positive number x such that a/x=x/b
What is the altitude?
The altitude of a right triangle is the geometric mean between two parts of the hypotenuse
What is the leg of a right triangle
The geometric mean between the whole hypotenuse and the adjacent piece of the hypotenuse (piece next to it on same line;
What is the formula to calculate the altitude of a right triangle?
Piece 1/Alt = Alt/Piece 2
How do you calculate the leg of a right triangle?
Piece 1/Leg 1 = Leg 1/Whole Hypotenuse
