What are Presumptive signs of pregnancy ?
- Amenorrhea (Absence of menses)
- Nausea & Vomiting
- Urinary frequency (can be one of the 1st signs)
- Breast tenderness (d/t excess hormones in body)
Why is Urinary frequency one of the 1st signs of pregnancy ?
B/c the Uterus immediately starts to stretch after implantation

What are Probable signs of pregnancy ?

(+) pregnancy tests are based on what ?
Presence of hCG levels
What are other conditions that can increase hCG levels ?
- Hydatidiform (molar pregnancy), or some medications
What is a Hydatidiform (molar pregnancy) ?
Benign neoplasm or grape-like vesicles that can become malignant
If Hydatidiform’s (molar pregnancy) are not malignant than what must be done ?
A DNC is required with close follow-up for 6 months to 1 year
If the molar pregnancy is malignant, how is it treated ?
Treatment will be based on the stage and grade of the cancer
What is Goodell’s sign ?
Softening of the cervix
When is Goodell’s sign present ?
Second month
What is Chadwick’s sign ?
Blueish color of the vaginal mucosa and cervix
When does Chadwick’s sign become present ?
4th week
What is Hegar’s sign ?
Softening of the lower uterine segment
When does Hegar’s sign present ?
2nd/3rd month
Braxton Hicks contractions occur when ?
Throughout pregnancy
What do Braxton Hick’s contractions do ?
Move blood through the placenta
What are types of Pigmentation changes of the skin seen with a Probable pregnancy ?
- Linea nigra
- Facial chloasma (mask of pregnancy)
- Abdomen striae (stretch marks)
- Darkening of the areola (around the nipple)
What is Linea nigra ?
Dark line down the center of the abdomen
What are Positive signs of pregnancy ?
- Fetal Heartbeat
Doppler --> 10 - 12 weeks
Fetoscope --> 17 to 20 weeks
- Fetal movement (client not feeling it. The nurse or Dr. is feeling it)
- Ultrasound
