In an Emergency Delivery what do you want to tell the client to do ?

A

Tell the client to pant/blow to decrease the urge to push

   - Should only push during contractions

With an Emergency Delivery/Percipitous. Delivery what things should be done ? (in correct order)

A
  • Wash hands
  • Elevate HOB
  • Place something clean under buttocks
  • Decrease touching of vaginal area
  • As head crowns, tear the amniotic sac
  • Place hand on fetal head and apply gentle pressure (No pushing back in)
  • When the head is out, feel for the cord around the neck
    (this is called a nuchal cord)
  • Ease each shoulder out
  • The rest will deliver fast
  • Keep baby’s head down
  • DRY BABY* (b/c the baby cannot regular its temperature)
  • Place baby on mothers abdomen
  • Cover baby (skin to skin is great way to keep baby warm)
  • Wait for placenta to separate/deliver
  • Can push to deliver placenta
  • Inspect placenta for intactness (want placenta out within 30 minutes
  • Tie the cord off with something like a clean shoestring or a narrow strip of cloth
    (place the knot no closer than 4 inches to the baby’s navel and a second Knot about 8 inches from the babies navel
  • Check firmness of uterus (or will hemorrhage)
    (if soft do fundal massage)
