signal flow Flashcards
what is signal flow?
the path of the audio signal from its source to its destination
Internal signal flow?
Happens inside audio processors, Interfaces, etc
External signal flow?
Relates to the path of sound between elements in the recording studio
Channel path?
anything from the source to the recorder
Monitor path?
anything from the recorder to the listener
Audio singla level?
- Microphone level
- Instrument level (Hi Z)
- Professional line level (+4dBu)
- Consumer line level (-10dBV)
- Speaker level
Gains stage?
is a point during an audio signal flow that the engineer can make adjustments to the level
Gain staging
is the process of managing the relative levels in a series of gain stages to prevent the introduction of noise and distortion.
Unbalanced signal?
signal + ground
Balanced signal?
signal (-), signal (+) and ground
Instruments?
signal and ground
Advantages of balanced lines?
- Phase cancellation
- Rf Rejection
- Higher quality
- Longer runs
What is a BUS?
“Bus Bar” is essentially a conductor carrying a common signal/path. it’s an audio path that can sum multiple audio paths together.
Types of BUS?
Mix bus, Aux bus, Group bus
Direct output?
A single output of the channel path is taken pre or post-fader. (usually feeds the inputs of the recorder)
