Microphones Flashcards
What is the DC standard?
48v
Active circuit?
a device that requires additional power
Passive circuit?
a device that works through natural electromagnetic properties
Capsule?
a transducer element of a given mic; what responds to air pressure?
Active mics?
condensers
Passive mics?
dynamic (moving coil) & ribbon
Characteristics of dynamic mics?
- Good low-frequency response,
- Not good for high frequencies.
- Take high SPL, not very sensitive.
- Poor transient response
- durable
A common use of dynamic mics?
- Live sound
- Drums & percussion
- Electric guitars
- Horns
- Vocals
Common models of dynamic mics
- Shure SM57
- Shure SM58
- Akg D112
- Sennheiser MD 421
How does it work (dynamic mics)?
Electromagnetic principle (wire coil and magnet to creat signal)
Characteristics of ribbon mics?
- good low-frequency response
- good mid-range response
- extreme sensitivity to SPL
- Good transient response
- fragile diagram
- no 48v
The common use of ribbon?
- strings
- horns
- woodwinds
- E gtrs
Common models of ribbon?
- Royer R121
- Cole 4038
- RCA 77
how does it work (ribbon mics)?
lightweight metal ribbon suspended btw the poles of a magnet and as it vibrates a voltage is induced and is picked off by contacts at the end of the ribbon.
Characteristics of condenser mics?
- balanced low & mid frequencies + excellent highs
- sensitive to high SPL
- good transient
- requires 48v
- most common have selectable polar patterns
