Sigmund Freud Stages Of Human Development Flashcards
What are the stages of Human Development?
Oral stage
Anal stage
Phallic stage
Latent Period
Genital stage
What is the Oral Stage?
(Birth to 1 year) The weening process: a child needs to become less dependent on the caretaker. If Oral fixation occurs, the child could have issues with dependency and aggression: smoking, drinking, eating, and nail-biting.
What is the Anal Stage?
( 1 to 3 years) Inappropriate parental responses If the parents are too lenient, the child will develop an anal-expulsive personality. If the parents are anal-retentive, they are too strict so the child is orderly, rigid, and obsessive.
What is the Phalliac Stage?
(3 to 6 years) Eventually, the child begins to identify with the same-sex parent, with the mean of vicariously possessing the other parent.
What is the Latent Period?
(6 to Puberty) This stage revolves around the superego and ego, contributing to the latent period. This stage begins around the time children enter school and become more concerned with peer relationships, hobbies, and other interests.
The Genital Stage
(Puberty to Death) Teens in genital stage development can balance their most basic urges against the need to conform to the demands of reality and social norms.
