Level 1: Preconvention Morality
Stage 1: Obedience and Punishment Orientation
Stage 2: Individualism and Exchange.
Level 1: lasts until approximately age 9
Stage 1: The child is good to avoid being punished. If a person is punished, they must have done wrong.
Stage 2: Children realize that different individuals have different viewpoints and there is not just one right view.
Level 2: Conventional Morality
Stage 3: Good Interpersonal Relationships
Stage 4: Maintaining the Social Order
Level 2: lasts until approximately age 10-14
Stage 3: The child/ individual is to be seen as good by others, so the answers relate to the approval of others.
Stage 4: The child becomes more disciplined and aware of society’s rules, and the child obeys laws to uphold the law and avoid guilt.
Level 3: Postconventional Morality
Stage 5: Social Contract and Individual Rights.
Stage 6: Universal Principles
Level 3: Some adults; rare
Stage 5: The child/individual becomes aware that while rules/laws might exist for the good of the most significant number, there are times when they will work against the interest of particular individuals.
Stage 6: For the few people at this stage have developed their own set of moral guidelines, which may or may not fit the law. The principles apply to everyone.
