From 6-7 until puberty
What happens to the sexual impulse during the latent stage?
It is suppressed
Why is the sexual urge repressed in the latent stage?
Due to the emergence of the ego and superego
When does the genital stage begin?
Begins at puberty
What is the focus of the genital stage?
Focus on pleasure in sexual intercourse, but the desire to share mutual gratification with someone
Define the conscious mind
All mental elements in awareness at any given point in time
Define the preconscious
Elements that are not conscious, but that can become conscious either readily or with some difficulty
Define the unconscious
A state in which ideas are formed before being made conscious
-contains all drives and urges, is beyond our awareness
Define the Id
(Unconscious system)The biological force that translates the organisms needs to motivational forces or wishes
What is the Ego?
(Conscious system) The ego relates the organism to reality by means of its consciousness/ awareness
Define the superego
(Preconscious system)The record of things to avoid and strategies to cope
How does the Superego communicate its requirements to the Ego?
Uses feelings like shame, pride, and guilt
What is the internal conflict or struggle?
The strivings between the Id, Ego, and Superego
