When you’ve immediately finished using the forklift what 3 things do you need to do?
1) Park it
2) Remove keys
3) Conduct post-operational checks
Where are some areas you should NOT park a forklift?
- Sloping surfaces
- Near First Aid stations
- Near fire fighting applicances
- Near doorways
- On or near pedestrian walkways
- Emergency exits
- Where it will obstruct other traffic
When parking the forklift what should you do?
1) Fork arms are correctly positioned (tips down, tilted forward and lowered to the ground)
2) Select appropriate gear (e.g. neutral) and apply park brake
3) Turn engine off and remove keys
4) Shut off LPG gas cylinder valve (if applicable)
5) Carry out any other site specific procedures, such as securing the equipment and site as required
What should you post-op checks include?
- Visual inspection of forklift, looking for anything odd, broken or damaged.
- Visual inspection of the environment e.g. any fluid leaking.
- Signals (check for alarms, lights, electronic indicators showing that something may be wrong)
- Gauges (showing temps and levels of fuel, oil and other fluids)
Where should you charge a forklift battery?
In a well ventilated area away from any naked flame.
Why should you not smoke around a charging battery?
The fumes may ignite, causing an explosion or fire.
What should you do if you find a fault?
Stop
