What are shruti texts?

A

That which is heard, they are divine in origin and were revealed to the rishis bu the gods. This includes the vedas.

What are the smitri texts?

A

That which is remembered- less authoritative texts of human origin such as the Mahabharata, the Ramayana and the Puranas.

Why is it difficult to fit the Bhagavad Gita into either category?

A

Some say it is shruti as it’s based on a conversation between Arjuna and Krishna, others believe that even though it was based on historical events, it was remembered by man and its details can change with every retelling, it is also part of the Mahabharata, which is smitri.

What is the Mahabharata?

A

History of greater India, handed down over 1000s of years. It has 110,000 verses, making it the longest poem in the world. It focuses on the political tension between the pandavas and kauravas.

A
