Question 1

Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working

• press brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors, other parked vehicles
• ask examiner to help by standing behind car as you press pedal, brake lights of some cars don’t work unless ignition is on

Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working

Answer 2

• turn on hazard warning lights, walk around car to check all of the indicator bulbs are operating
• (test can also be carried out using indicator switch, but ignition must usually be on)

Show me how you would switch headlight from dipped to main beam- explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car

• operate switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary)

- check with main beam warning light (usually blue)

Show me how you would switch on rear fog lights, and explain when you would use them

• operate switch (dipped headlights and ignition if necessary)
• check warning light is on
• explain that you would use them when visibility is seriously reduced to less than 100m and switch off again once visibility improves

• operate control to wash and wipe windscreen )turn on ignition if necessary)

Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, should include rear and front screens

• set all demister controls, including:
• fan (and air conditioning if fitted)
• temperature
• air direction/ source and heated screen to clear windscreen and windows
• engine does not have to be on for this demonstration

Show me/ explain how you would check that power assisted steering is working before starting a journey

• if steering becomes heavy- system may not be working properly
• before starting a journey, 2 simple checks can be made
  gentle pressure on steering wheel, maintained while engine is started, should result in slight- but noticeable movement, as system operates
• alternatively- turning steering wheel just after moving off will give immediate indication that power assistance is functioning
• if steering is very heavy, system has failed

Show me how you would check that horn is working (off road only)

Answer 8

• check is carried out by locating horn control and pressing it
  only carried out if legal, in some cars the ignition has to be on

Question 9

Show me how you would check the parking brake (handbrake) for excessive wear. Make sure you keep control of your vehicle

• apply footbrake firmly
• demonstrate by releasing and applying handbrake- when it is fully applied it secures itself and is not at the end of its working travel
• (the cable that the handbrake operates should be tight enough to prevent the car from rolling, before the point at which handbrake mechanism cannot go any further
