Shoulder Girdle Flashcards
The girdle contains what two bones?
Scapula
Clavicle
Function of the shoulder girdle?
Increase ROM of UE
Most movements occur in which plane?
Scapular
What are the articulations of the girdle?
SCJ
ACJ
GHJ
Scapulothoracic (not true joint)
SCJ: O/I
Head of clavicle
Manubrium
ACJ: O/I
Acromion process
Lateral end of clavicle
GHJ: O/I
Glenoid fossa
Head of humerus
Scapulothoracic: O/I
floats on muscles beneath scapular
SCJ: Functions
1) FC to decrease compressional stress, increase SA
2) Increase boney fit (congruent)
3) Limit superior translation of clavicle head
SCJ: Anterior/Posterior SC Ligaments
Clavicle head to manubrium
*Prevents anterior/posterior movements of the head of clavicle
SCJ: Interclavicular Ligament
Connect one clavicle head to the other clavicle head
*Prevents lateral translation of clavicle
SCJ: Costoclavicular Ligament
medial inferior surface of clavicle to costal cartilage of 1st costal bone (extrinsic)
*Prevents superior translation of clavicle head
Only hyaline in body!
ACJ: Functions
Increase ROM of scapula
Less of this will cause increase in GHJ movements, overuse/injuries occur
ACJ Injuries
Shoulder separation: Lateral blow causes scapula and clavicle to move medially, causing superior movement (subluxation of AC joint)
ACJ: Anterior/Posterior AC Ligaments
Prevents superior luxation of clavicle
ACJ: Coracoclavicular Ligaments
Trapezoid - lateral
Conoid - medial
*Prevents superior luxation of clavicle
Where is the true axis of up/downward rotation?
SC joint
Protraction is also known as…
Abduction
Retraction is also known as…
Adduction
Shoulder flexion is grouped with scapular…
Posterior tilting
Shoulder extension is grouped with scapular…
Anterior tilting
